In my blog I often complain bitterly and fiercely criticize post-modern relativism, the pseudo-philosophy that denies objective truth. Because in its absence, there is only personal opinion. A Dutch proverb states that bickering over personal tastes is pointless ... Indeed, I like red, you have a preference for blue: how ever would you convince the other that blue is better than red? You can't, so all debate is pointless and merely frustrating!
Amidst all the personal opinions (and the occasional truth) we hurl at each other in the media and in the blegosphere all day, we seem however to be the lucky ones. A co-blogger today in Alexandria, Egypt has been convicted for insulting both Islam and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and sentenced him to four years in jail over his writings on the Internet. Unimaginable on this side of the cultural divide!
Bloggers, beware of your free space, albeit just to vent personal opinions (and the occasional truth)! A dangerous precedent indeed in a world that sometimes seems to be in reverse, instead of full steam ahead!
